MSR 91st Anniversary Gala Honors Legacy and Celebrates Community

On Saturday, August 16, the Renaissance Minneapolis Hotel, The Depot was filled with elegance, energy, and purpose as the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder celebrated its 91st Anniversary Gala. Under the theme “Heartbeat of a Healthy Community,” the evening brought together community leaders, artists, entrepreneurs, and allies to honor the past, uplift the present, and envision the future of Black media and community power.

From the red carpet photo experience to the final toast, the Gala was more than a night out. It was a living testament to the MSR’s mission and a reminder of the essential role Black-owned media plays in telling our stories.

Speakers reflected on the importance of sustaining Black voices in media and the work still ahead to ensure those voices continue to thrive.

Celebrating Changemakers

The night’s honorees and featured guests embodied the Gala’s theme. Leaders and visionaries from across the Twin Cities shared stories of resilience, innovation, and community care. Performances carried the spirit of joy and cultural pride, while moments of reflection reminded attendees why the MSR’s legacy is both historic and urgent.
