Ukrainians in Minnesota celebrate Ukrainian Independence Day as war overshadows celebrations

MINNEAPOLIS — On Sunday, Ukrainians around the world marked the 34th anniversary of their nation’s independence, commemorating the moment in 1991 when Ukraine broke away from the former Soviet Union.

While Aug. 24 is usually a day of pride and celebration, this year’s festivities are touched by somber notes and renewed resolve, as the nation battles through a war with Russia that has lasted three and a half years.

In Minneapolis, the Ukrainian American Community Center hosted its own bittersweet celebration.
