Disturbing Discovery in Hopkins Apartment
Police responded to an apartment in Hopkins on Friday after receiving a report of an assault. When officers arrived, they were met by the suspect’s son, who said his father, Nermin Mandal, lived with his grandmother.
The son reported finding the elderly woman unconscious and covered in blood. Court records detail the extent of her injuries: her face swollen and cut, both arms broken, her eyes swollen shut, and she was moaning in pain.
Suspect’s Mental Health History
Officers found Mandal inside the apartment with blood on his hands and shirt. He allegedly told police his grandmother was an “alien” and accused her of killing his daughter.
Mandal’s son told investigators his father suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and was in a state of deep psychosis during the attack.
Victim’s Condition
The grandmother was rushed to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with a brain bleed, multiple facial fractures, and a sternum fracture. As of Tuesday, she remained intubated and unconscious, with physicians warning she may not survive.
