ST PAUL, Minn. — An appeals court has ruled that a search conducted on Myon Burrell’s car in 2023 was legal, meaning he will remain in prison to serve out the remainder of a 5-year sentence for drug and gun possession.
Burrell was released from prison in 2020 after his sentence was commuted in a high-profile murder case. He was just 16 years old when convicted of killing 11-year-old Tyesha Edwards back in 2002, and a movement to free Burrell turned up questions about the police investigation.
But his freedom did not last long. In December of 2023, Robbinsdale police pulled Burrell over for a traffic violation and searched his car after smelling marijuana smoke. They found drugs and a loaded gun, which he was prohibited from possessing. Burrell was convicted by a Hennepin County judge and sentenced to a mandatory five years in prison…
