Annunciation shooting: Sophia Forchas no longer in critical condition; injured couple speaks out

Just over two weeks after the deadly Annunciation Church and School shooting, the condition of the remaining hospitalized victim is improving.

As of Wednesday evening, 12-year-old Sophia Forchas had been downgraded from “critical” to “serious,” a condition in which she remained late Thursday afternoon, according to a Hennepin Healthcare spokesperson.

Sophia was shot in the head on Aug. 27 when a 23-year-old former student opened fire during all-school Mass from the outside of the church. She was rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center, where her mother works as a pediatric ICU nurse.

The neurosurgeon who’s overseeing Sophia’s care shared an update on her status last Friday and said he’s “a little bit more optimistic that she is going to survive.”…
