Minneapolis Council Member Demands Action on Safety and Homelessness Following Hiawatha Shooting

In the wake of a recent shooting at Hiawatha and Lake Street, Minneapolis Council Member Jamal Osman is reiterating calls for definitive action on issues of safety and homelessness in the area. The incident, which left five individuals wounded, underscores what Osman describes as the consequences of inaction by city authorities in addressing the crises manifesting in Ward 6.

Osman’s concerns focus on encampments and unsafe gatherings under city bridges that compromise not only the well-being of residents and the homeless but also present escalated risks for traffic and public health, according to a statement released by the City of Minneapolis. He criticizes the slow response from city officials and the insufficient coordination between the City, Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), and State authorities; meanwhile, Mayor Frey has only recently committed to contacting MnDOT and securing the area, which some, including council member Osman, suggest comes belatedly.
