In what is being hailed as a significant move to combat the homelessness crisis in Minneapolis, Ward 9 Council Member Jason Chavez has announced via social media the completion of the Valiance Shelter and Apartment in the Longfellow neighborhood. The new facility, which includes 50 apartments and a 54-bed shelter, aims to provide a respite for those struggling with unsheltered homelessness.
Chavez underscored the dire need for such initiatives, noting, “On October 5th there were 0 shelter beds available at night, on October 6th there was 1 shelter bed available at night, and on October 7th there were 0 shelter beds available at night.” His comments shine a light on the pressing scarcity of resources for people experiencing homelessness in the city. “That is why we need to invest in places like this, expand our shelter capacity and lead with a housing first approach,” he added in his post.
