New rash of vandalism in Minneapolis leaves more than 100 cars damaged

MINNEAPOLIS — At least five consecutive days of vandalism have damaged more than 100 cars in parts of Minneapolis, leaving both residents and police frustrated.

After dealing with multiple large-scale vandalism earlier in the year, MPD confirms a new spree began Oct. 9, impacting neighborhoods in the city’s third and fifth precincts. On that day, and four days after (ending Oct. 13), at least 124 vehicles were reported damaged.

  • Oct. 9 – 9 vehicles
  • Oct. 10 – 13 vehicles
  • Oct. 11 – 11 vehicles
  • Oct. 12 – 21 vehicles
  • Oct. 13 – 70 vehicles

MPD says the department’s Crime Pattern Response Protocol was activated on Oct. 9, when multiple 911 callers reported people breaking into vehicles. Additional officers from all five precincts and the Minnesota State Patrol flooded the neighborhood of 31st Ave. S/Franklin Ave., but were unable to locate suspects.
