Prince connections lead to new award-winning mezcal brand

MINNEAPOLIS — A new mezcal brand with deep Minnesota roots and connections to Prince is launching in the Twin Cities, bringing award-winning spirits crafted by a female distiller in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Las Melodías de la Luna, a women-owned ancestral mezcal, is the creation of co-founders Ingrid Chavez and Jacqui Thompson, who met in 2016 through their shared connections to the late music icon.

Thompson managed Prince’s Paisley Park recording studios and co-founded the PRN Alumni Foundation, a nonprofit established by Prince’s team to continue his legacy of social justice. She previously co-founded the agave brand Revel Avila in 2012…
