Retrial ends with guilty verdict for man who orchestrated real estate agent’s murder

The man who prosecutors say arranged the New Year’s Eve kidnapping and murder of a Minneapolis real estate agent in 2019 was convicted on all counts at the conclusion of his second trial.

Lydon Akeem Wiggins, 40, had previously been convicted and sentenced to life in prison for his role in the death of 28-year-old Monique Baugh, but the Minnesota Supreme Court overturned the verdict, ruling that the judge overseeing his case misstated the law while providing jury instructions.

A second trial lasting three weeks ended Monday with jurors again delivering a guilty verdict on all four charges:

  • Two counts of aiding and abetting first-degree murder
  • One count of aiding and abetting first-degree attempted murder
  • One count of aiding and abetting kidnapping to commit great bodily harm

“Monique Baugh’s family has waited nearly six years for the cases against all defendants to conclude,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said in a statement. “Mr. Wiggins played a primary role in Monique’s death, and he is being held accountable. My thoughts are with Monique’s family, and I want to express my gratitude to the jury for their service and to our trial team for securing this conviction.”…
