Krispy Kreme returns to Twin Cities nearly 20 years after flameout

FRIDLEY, Minn. — There is a serious buzz Wednesday morning in Fridley – perhaps due to an overload of sugar – as donut giant Krispy Kreme re-enters the Twin Cities market, opening the doors on a new location just off I-694.

Lines of cars and people stacked up overnight at 57th and University Avenues as the 8 a.m. opening approached. Donut fiends gathered around firepits, threw bags, played Jenga and basked in anticipation of a soft, sweet, original glazed Krispy Kreme. The donut shop took over a large space that once hosted a CVS pharmacy.

The scene was reminiscent of one that unfolded some 23 years ago in Maple Grove, as the company opened Minnesota’s first location in the trendy northwest suburb. The hype drew huge crowds, creating traffic problems so significant that Maple Grove police had to assign officers to keep things moving…
