The Minneapolis Business, Housing, and Zoning Committee has just green-lighted the 2025 Affordable Housing Trust Fund (AHTF) Award Recommendations, which earmarks substantial funding for the Hiawatha Commons Project. Council Member Jason Chavez of Ward 9 heralded the committee’s decision on social media, announcing that $1.68 million would be channeled towards the refurbishment of Hiawatha Commons at 2740 Minnehaha Ave S. This initiative promises to breathe new life into the existing structure, providing essential improvements for the building’s 80 residential units.
According to Chavez’s Facebook post, the funding will ensure that affordable housing remains within reach for local residents, with allocations targeted at varied income levels – 48 units at 30% Area Median Income (AMI), 15 at 60% AMI, and 17 at 80% AMI. In an effort to both staunchly support and also to bolster the city’s commitment to inclusivity, Chavez emphasized the importance of this development. He stated, “I’m thankful for the advocacy from the community and tenants along with the work of city staff.” He continued on to express his eagerness “to getting this across the finish line next week at full council.”
