Edina Police Clarify Role in Immigration Enforcement, Reassure Local Residents

The Edina Police Department has issued a statement following reports of federal immigration officials targeting members of the Somali community in the Twin Cities. The Department stated that it enforces only state and local laws. It does not enforce federal immigration laws and will not participate in federal immigration enforcement in Edina.

The statement said Edina police officers do not ask about anyone’s immigration status. This applies to suspects, victims, and witnesses. Officers are not allowed to share information with federal immigration agents or detain people only at the request of federal agencies.
