Online posts allege a ‘cover up’ at the U, but officials say they wanted to protect student privacy

The University of Minnesota said it did not release information about an incident last month involving a student in crisis to protect the student’s privacy. But in the absence of information, rumors ran wild online, driving concerns about the university’s communication with students.

The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15. University of Minnesota police received a call about a person in crisis at a residence hall in Minneapolis. The 911 caller said a student fell down the stairwell, according to the incident report.
