Frey vetoes Minneapolis City Council’s homeless encampment response ordinance

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has rejected the Minneapolis City Council’s new plan to give people living in homeless encampments access to bathrooms, trash collection, fire extinguishers and other resources.

On Thursday, Frey vetoed an ordinance passed last week by the council, saying it would “incentivize” encampments to grow, “making them larger and more dangerous.”

The ordinance would require the city to provide public health services to encampments occupied by at least 20 people within 10 days of the encampment’s formation. The city also would have to give at least seven days notice to residents, who would be offered personal property storage, before clearing an encampment…
