Nadia Mohamed, the mayor of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, and the nation’s first elected Somali-American mayor, has drawn attention with recent remarks in a video expressing concern that America is gradually losing its core identity. As a Muslim who immigrated from Somalia at age 10 and became the youngest Muslim mayor in the country upon her election in 2023, Mohamed spoke about fears within the Somali community amid ongoing national debates over immigration and cultural changes.
In the video, Mohamed described widespread anxiety among many Somalis in her community. She said that most are afraid they are about to lose their home, not because they face eviction or deportation as American citizens, but because the country appears to be slowly dismantling into something unrecognizable. “When we look at America, we’re seeing it slowly dismantle into something that is not recognizable, that America is losing its Americanness, right?” she stated. She emphasized that this concern differs from claims made by supporters of the Make America Great Again movement, clarifying, “Not in the same way that MAGA says it. No, no, no, no. But because, like, it is just slowly becoming something that we don’t recognize it to be America, right?”
