In the wake of disagreements with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, high school walkouts have returned with force. Students across the country are participating, but Minnesota has become a focal point. For example, Roseville students recently walked out to protest ICE. Apple Valley students did the same weeks earlier.

Some praise the students for taking a stand. However, that praise ignores what walkouts actually produce: lost instructional time and gutted institutional authority…
