St. Louis Park teen remains hospitalized following severe infection

Community members in St. Louis Park are raising money to help a local high school student who has been hospitalized for weeks after contracting a severe infection.

According to GoFundMe organizers, Jostin Tubon is a student at St. Louis Park High School and was hospitalized the day after Christmas after coming down with blastomycosis, a severe respiratory infection. He was eventually put on life support.

Blastomycosis is contracted when you breathe in fungus which lives in dirt or rotting wood, according to Cleveland Clinic. It can cause flu-like symptoms, and can spread from the lungs to other parts of the body.

“He spent a full month on ECMO, a temporary life support machine, to allow his lungs to heal,” the page’s creator writes. “The infection in his lungs has improved greatly, however, doctors still anticipate he will need at least a year of treatment, including intensive physical and occupational therapy, before he recovers.”…
