New image shows what man found in Mississippi River in 1996 may have looked like, tips still sought

MINNEAPOLIS — Thirty years after his remains were discovered on the Mississippi River, officials are still trying to find his name. To do that, they are asking the public to help.

The man was discovered in September 1996 near the First Avenue Bridge in Minneapolis. He was wearing Reeboks, size 10.5 and a Rumors-brand wristwatch with a black plastic strap and a silver metal face. He was between 28 and 50 years old, 5 feet 9 inches tall, and 192 pounds. He had short black hair with grey stubble on his chin and upper lip. His right front tooth was chipped, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office said.

He was buried in an unmarked grave in 1997. Forensic scientists at the time thought he was of East Asian descent, but with new technology have been able to determine he is an Indigenous relative. At the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office, his preserved DNA samples are stored with ceremonial tobacco as a gesture of respect…
