Minneapolis mayor vetoes eviction extension, announces $1 million in emergency rental assistance

MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey vetoed an ordinance Wednesday that would have extended eviction notices from 30 to 60 days.

The Minneapolis City Council approved the ordinance 7 to 5 on March 5 with one council member abstaining from the vote, and some legislators and renters have been vocal in urging the mayor not to veto. Advocates said it would give residents time to access mutual aid and raise money for rent in order to avoid eviction.

“We are really just devastated to hear this news and really on behalf of our clients,” said HOME Line Co-Executive Director Eric Hauge. “Generally speaking, without additional time prior to eviction filings, Minneapolis tenants will suffer while landlords will effectively continue business as usual.”…
