Brooklyn Park driver serving 59 years for fatal crash gets more jail time

Derrick John Thompson, a 30-year-old Brooklyn Park resident, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison followed by five years of supervised release for possession of fentanyl and a firearm following a deadly vehicle crash that claimed the lives of five young women in 2023.

Based on the ruling in U.S. District Court, five years of Thompson’s sentence will run consecutively to the nearly 59-year sentence that Thompson received for third-degree murder and criminal vehicular homicide last year in Hennepin County District Court. Both cases came out of the same 2023 crash, which occurred just five months after Thompson was released from prison in California for a similar 2018 incident.

Thompson is accused of driving 95 mph on Interstate 35W, passing a state trooper, exiting on Lake Street and then running a red light. At that intersection, he reportedly smashed into the victims’ car at a high rate of speed…
