Ice storm fears spark weather warning in Twin Cities; heavy snow to hit northern Minnesota

A winter storm warning is in effect in parts of the Twin Cities metro, several counties in southeastern Minnesota, and in western Wisconsin ahead of a potential ice storm that could have a major impact on travel and lead to power outages over the next 24 hours.

The warning has been issued for the south metro counties of Washington, Scott and Dakota, as well as Le Sueur, Rice and Goodhue counties to the south of the Twin Cities, where 0.25 inches of ice are “likely” along with sleet and snow as a messy winter storm arrives in Minnesota on Wednesday evening.

“The main change from prior forecasts is that the latest forecast soundings indicate a trend towards greater freezing rain potential overnight, prompting the issuance of a Winter Storm Warning across eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin, where ice accumulations around 0.25″ are possible,” the NWS Twin Cities forecast discussion reads…
