Proposed bill would restrict assisted living community locations

Some Minnesota assisted living providers would be restricted in where they could locate their communities and would be subject to oversight changes under a bill being considered by state lawmakers.

The legislation seeks to impose new location requirements and reform oversight and inspections of small assisted living residential homes in Minnesota’s Twin Cities, but an unintended consequence could be the limiting of access for potential residents who need those services the most, according to senior living experts.

House File 4144 proposes reforming aspects of the Minnesota Adult Abuse Reporting Center process, increasing the mandated distance between buildings in an effort to promote more consistent geographic location of congregate care settings, requiring local jurisdictions to be notified about new provider licenses issues, and changing oversight and inspections of senior living communities…
