Beloved pizza chain finally shares why it’s closing all locations after 50 years

Beloved pizza chain Gina Marie’s Pizza abruptly shut down its four Minneapolis locations last October without providing fans any explanation. Now, the chain has finally disclosed why.

A bankruptcy filing in March revealed that the company’s operators had $2.9 million in debt, with assets of only $64,000. Northern Brands Inc. filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, meaning the business will be liquidated rather than restructured.

The chain was established in 1975 in Minnetonka, Minnesota, and later expanded to Chanhassen, Eden Prairie, Edina, and Plymouth. Recently, a slew of restaurant chains have fallen prey to a similar fate, with Texas-based Mexican restaurant chain Abuelo’s and Massachusetts-based Italian chain Bertucci’s following suit.
