Public comment not streamed, ‘unwise’ policy sparking transparency concerns

A policy that limits who can hear public comments in a northeast metro school district is being described as “unwise.”

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS realized this was White Bear Lake Area Schools board policy as it sought to hear the first round of public comments since an adult was charged with posing as a teen after attending weeks of class last year.

Instead of hearing the several people who signed up for public comment, the live stream video was silenced, and a slate, pictured below, explained why. Still, cell phone video from the meeting shows at least one person asking about the district’s plans to prevent future fraudulent enrollment.

School board policy states, in part, “Public comment is not a time for citizens to speak to the community or to the audience. For this reason, public comment sessions will not be recorded or live streamed.”…
