City attorney’s office weighs in on Minneapolis Community Safety Commissioner appointments

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minneapolis City Attorney’s Office is weighing in after Mayor Jacob Frey vetoed the city council’s action denying the reappointment of Todderick Barnette as the Community Safety Commissioner.

According to the city attorney’s office, there are several complicated scenarios, beginning with the city council taking up the veto at its April 23 meeting. The council will need a two-thirds majority (9) to override the veto. Should the veto be overridden, the city attorney’s office says the nomination is denied, and Frey would have two more chances to make his own nomination.

If the veto is sustained, the council’s denial would be nullified and Barnette’s nomination would remain open…
