Uptown Minneapolis is getting a tropical twist. A tiki-themed Thai restaurant called Tiki Tom’s Thai is headed for one of Lake Street’s more prominent corners, stepping into a storefront that has turned over several times in recent years. The opening is shaping up as another test of whether fresh dining concepts can help bring steady foot traffic back to a neighborhood that has seen its share of turbulence.

As reported by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal, Tiki Tom’s Thai is taking over the space at 1601 W. Lake St. and is set to open within the next month. The space most recently housed Matriarch and was previously home to Pinoli, adding another chapter to a stretch of Lake Street that has seen a parade of tenants.

Uptown’s slow rebound

The restaurant arrives as Uptown continues a slow and sometimes bumpy rebound from the pandemic, civil unrest, and months of disruptive street reconstruction that rerouted traffic and squeezed merchants, according to The Star Tribune. The phased reopening of Hennepin Avenue was designed to restore access and draw people back to the corridor, Axios reported, although business owners say the recovery still feels uneven.

Vacant storefronts and public-safety worries continue to color the neighborhood’s reputation, even as some corners show more life than they have in years. For every new sign that flickers on, there always seems to be another for-lease sign going up a few blocks away.

Small openings, cautious optimism
