Prichard Mayor: Outsourcing garbage service could save city more than $300,000 a year

PRICHARD, Ala. (NBC 15) — The City of Prichard is considering outsourcing garbage collection services as city leaders search for ways to improve reliability and cut costs. Mayor Carletta Davis says the city could save more than $300,000 annually by contracting a private sanitation company instead of continuing to operate its own collection system.

“If you polled the community, that’s one of the top things that they complain about, is the fact that garbage service is oftentimes inconsistent,” said Davis.

The city currently operates with three sanitation workers and leases garbage trucks from a private company. According to Davis, the city pays $8,500 monthly per truck to lease them but still must cover fuel, insurance, maintenance, and landfill costs separately.
