SATSUMA, Ala. (WKRG) — After certain areas on the Gulf Coast had severe flooding last week, residents who live on Orchard Road near HWY 43 in Satsuma are raising concerns after about 20 homes are now damaged.
Nickolas Kitzrow took News 5 inside his home. Furniture was scattered everywhere as fans were blasting to combat mold. Kitzrow says he was at work while his wife, his baby, and his 10-year-old autistic son were inside their home as water was gushing in last Friday.
“We had water up to your knee,” said Nickolas Kitzrow. “We had to cart in sandbags to the house,” Kitzrow continued. “We had to put our dogs in the garage to get out of the water, because they were actually underwater. Because it was so deep outside. We’d had to tear out walls. We had to tear out our flooring. There was things floating all over.”

Kitzrow said his neighbors have it worse.
“The neighbors across the street. I actually had to hop out that window. There is an elderly couple [that was] trying to clean up their house. Their floor was floating above the water. The elderly gentleman had broken his arm trying to secure the place in his house. It’s just been a wreck for everyone,” said Kitzrow.
Mayor of Satsuma Mark Barlow said Orchard Road is used to flooding.
“That has been a problem for a number of years. Over the over several years, we have added two retention ponds. We went back and basically doubled the size of one of the retention ponds to try to relieve that area over there. And it seems to have helped a lot. But in these downpours that we have, that amount of rain was just more than they could handle,” Barlow said.Yet Orchard Road is not classified as a flood zone.
