MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – More than a year after a rent increase at Mobile Government Plaza sparked a dispute between the city and Mobile County, a compromise could be on the horizon.
The County Commission owns the building, which houses both county and city offices, as well as the state court system. The city had been paying $125,000 a month. In June of last year, the county informed the city that the rent would increase to $237,022.
The city resisted, refusing to make any rent payments at all. After his election in August, Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis ordered the city to resume payments – but at the previous $125,000 rate. And that is where things have stood as the two sides have tried to work something out…
