Navy League of Mobile looking for help showing sailors Mardi Gras hospitality

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Members of the Navy League of Mobile need help showing sailors a good time during Mardi Gras. They’re asking people to help demonstrate good southern hospitality this carnival season.

In a little less than three weeks Mobile’s Mardi Gras ship will dock here and that means nearly 400 sailors will have shore leave–they need people to show them around.

Mobile has had an official Mardi Gras ship for years. The Navy League of Mobile is looking for people to volunteer to take sailors to dinner, a parade, or a party. It’s a chance for the shipmates to get to know this port and for people to get to know them. It’s a rare chance to have shore leave and also have plenty to do.

“They stay very busy. Their operations tempo now is pretty busy where they’re constantly either deploying or fixing the ship and training going back out so they don’t get to touch the civilian population. The Americans and the Americans don’t get to see them and touch them and see what they do,” said Navy League Mobile President Pete Riehm.
