MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — City leaders estimated that 2,500 square feet of brick could fall from the top of the East side of the Civic Center on Canal Street if action isn’t taken.
The 16-foot by 32-foot area, according to District 2 Councilman William Carroll, buckled in on itself.

Carroll said the bolster that holds the brick to the wall has deteriorated over time.
“There may be some structural failure with the wall ties behind the brick that would actually hold the brick to the walls themselves on top of the lintel,” Carroll said. “It’s better to be safe than sorry.”
The city said the problem was not a structural issue, but rather a cosmetic issue.

“It has a concrete mezzanine floor underneath it, so if the wall were to come down, there wouldn’t be any danger to anyone inside,” Carroll said. “The danger would be from the splatter over outside.”
