Friends, co-workers mourn Mississippi EMT killed in Mobile by alleged DUI driver

LUCEDALE, Miss. (WKRG) — Tomorrow marks one month since a first responder was killed in a crash when she stopped to help at an accident site in Mobile . 30-year-old Katie Pipkins was an EMT out of George County Mississippi–co-workers say she was everything you’d want in a a first responder and a friend.

From singing with co-workers to just being silly, friends say Katie Pipkins was committed to a job that can be difficult and brought joy.

“We get so overwhelmed by what’s dark and what’s bad that we can’t really pick out what the good things were. I think that was Katie’s best quality. She could find a little bit of life in a field of darkness and just make it bigger, then she could just focus on that,” said EMT Conner Brown.

On December 30th Pipkins and her crew had just transported a patient from a hospital in George County to USA Children’s and Women’s and were on their way back to Mississippi when they spotted a two-vehicle crash on Moffett Road near Shelton Beach road and stopped to help.
