Animal rights groups petition Mobile with 7 steps to protect horses at Mardi Gras parades

MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Two animal welfare groups are asking the city of Mobile to take seven steps to protect horses after a handler slapped and kicked a horse during the Conde Cavaliers’ Jan. 26 Mardi Gras parade.

Dominion Farm Animal Sanctuary — a Christian, Alabama-based not-for-profit organization, based on its website — along with Awakening Respect and Compassion for all Sentient Beings — a non-profit Mobile-based organization — wrote a letter to Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson and the Mobile City Council.

“We are writing because we share the community’s shock and outrage over the incident with the horse who fell and was subsequently beaten in public view at the recent Conde Cavaliers Mardi Gras parade ,” the letter said. “This incident is truly sickening and heartbreaking to watch.”

Dominion and ARC asked city leaders to prosecute the people responsible for the protection and welfare of the horse and asked them “to ensure that no such incident occurs in the future, that the horses being used in the parade are protected from cruelty and abuse, and that Mobile’s Mardi Gras parade doesn’t become associated nationwide with animal cruelty.”
