MAWSS responded to a sewer overflow on Feb. 4. According to a press release, the overflow, at a manhole in the 600 block of Ridgefield Road, was caused by a grease blockage.

Officials say the blockage resulted in approximately 266 gallons of wastewater overflowing into Twelve Mile Creek.

Mobile County health officials urge residents to take precautions when coming into contact with water that may have come from the incident.

Mobile County Health Officer, Dr. Kevin Philips Michaels, said, “Those who have come into direct contact with untreated sewage are advised to wash their hands and clothing thoroughly.”

Residents are also encouraged to take precautions when using Twelve Mile Creek for recreational purposes.

MAWSS said, “grease blockages occur when foods containing fats, oil or grease are put down the drain.”
