MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – It’s the most uniquely Mobile tradition in all of Mardi Gras – Joe Cain Day. Celebrated each year the Sunday before Fat Tuesday, it is a day to honor the legend credited with reviving Mardi Gras traditions in the Port City. It began with the annual early-morning spectacle of the “Merry Widows” wailing and moaning over Cain’s grave on Church Street, followed by the so-called People’s Parade, where anyone can participate, and almost anything goes.
