Last of Mardi Gras party trash picked up

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — The party is over and the cleanup continues. City of Mobile Crews will be out at dawn cleaning up the last remnants of Mardi Gras debris from downtown.

At a party, nobody wants to be on clean-up duty but there’s also a lot of pride in cleaning up a whole city.

With Carnival there’s an even bigger mess than usual to clean up around Mobile’s downtown.
Every morning crews line up to get ready for the big job ahead. Last year city crews picked up 300 tons of trash during the Mardi Gras season.

Thanks to smaller vehicles (carts with the words “litter patrol” on the front) some of that is picked up and recycled. It’s a big job that takes hours after the final parade ends, now the last of the trash gets picked up today and the barricades get put away.

“Overall, no matter how things run, you know, the goal is keeping the city clean,” said Director of Public Services Marc Vassallo. “Just hearing that report that somebody comes into the city the next morning and sees that nothing’s happened. So that’s the goal. So no matter what the method is, the result is really what I’m looking for. And and I think both of those results have been great.”
