New ‘Dog Day Out’ program to help Daphne Animal Shelter during transition

DAPHNE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — To say space is limited might be an understatement.

“We are full and we need people to come and adopt,” said Daphne Mayor Robin LeJeune.

Construction on a new 9,000 sq. ft. animal shelter continues on Johnson Road, but in the meantime, a portable building at the Daphne Sports Complex and a gated area outside are being used as a makeshift space until work on the new shelter is completed later this year.

Right now, there are five dogs available for adoption, but if you can’t adopt or even foster there’s another way you can help: It’s a new program that will help free up some space temporarily, but it’s also beneficial for the dogs, too.

“Dog Day Out is what it is where if somebody wants to come by and just get one of our animals, take them out for an hour, a couple of hours, a half day, take them to the park, show them some love it really has been proven to lessen their anxiety, lessen their fear, makes them more adoptable,” explained LeJeune.

The Dog Day Out program is open to Daphne residents by calling the shelter or stopping by the temporary office.
