Alabama’s annual Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday will take place from February 23 to 25, 2024. During this event, shoppers can buy certain items for severe weather preparedness without state sales tax. Local sales and use taxes can also be waived for these items by counties and municipalities.

The Alabama Department of Revenue has a list of all participating cities and counties for the 2024 event. Participants include Orange Beach, Baldwin County, and other Alabama municipalities. The full list is available on the department’s website.

Tax-free items include various types of batteries, portable radios, self-powered lights, waterproof sheeting, ground anchor systems, duct tape, plywood, non-electric food storage coolers and water storage containers, non-electric can openers, artificial ice, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and gas or diesel fuel tanks. However, coin, automobile, and boat batteries are not included.

Items priced at $1,000 or less, such as portable generators and power cords, are also tax-free.
