Wilmer couple experiences the effects of Hurricane Beryl while vacationing in Barbados

MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Instead of relaxing and laying out by the beach, a Wilmer couple is dealing with high winds and surf as the effects of Hurricane Beryl are being felt in Barbados.

Hope Wilbur and her husband left at the end of last week and headed to paradise. A few days after arriving, they started feeling the effects of the Category 4 storm.

“We’re staying at the Sandal’s Royal Barbados, which is on the south side of the island, and currently it’s very windy,” Wilbur said. “Periodically, we’ll have like feeder bands of rain that come through, which is typically how it is when we’re at home.”

Although the couple is planning to relax, one reason the couple went down to the island was to watch some friends renew their vows. Those plans were altered by the storm.

“We have friends, a couple who have been married for five years who had planned on renewing their vows here. That was supposed to be scheduled for 10 o’clock [Monday] morning, but because of the storm they had to do it early [Sunday] evening,” Wilbur said. “They were going to put it off until later in the week but because of that and not knowing exactly where the storm was going to go, they stated they could not guarantee. They basically didn’t know what was going to happen with the Island.”
