MCPSS Board Member Johnny Hatcher said the mildew grew spontaneously in sporadic places around the school.

“We take it serious. We take it very serious. These are our kids,” Hatcher said. “Although it is just mildew. It is still an eyesore.”

If left alone, experts said mildew like this can turn into more serious types of molds. If it’s not removed, it could cause respiratory issues in some people.

“You may have a small amount that is mold that I saw myself. It could be, could be,” Hatcher said. “I went through four [rooms] myself and saw some. And I went through at least five more and didn’t see any.”

Hatcher believed the issue started nearly three weeks ago when condensation built up after a temporary cooling tower malfunctioned.
