Mobile County Commission prepares to approve $23 million aquatics center

MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — The Mobile County Commission set its sights on approving a $23 million aquatics center in the Mobile County Sportsplex near the intersection of I-10 and I-65 off of Halls Mill Road.

Phase one of the project, which was originally thought to be a $21 million project, became a $23 million project after bids to build the new aquatics facility came in. The county took on $19 million of the price, the City of Mobile claimed $3 million and $500,000 came from the Mobile County Public School System.

Daryl Gomien, vice president of the City of Mobile Swim Associate, said no price can pay for the luxury that his group of nearly 1,000 has been waiting for about 20 years.

“Everybody has had a place to go but here,” Gomien said. “We’ve always had to go to other places.”

Phase one will include:

  • a 50-meter outdoor pool with dive wells
  • an instructional warm-up pool with locker rooms
  • a 25-yard x 25-meter short course indoor pool
