Mobile County OKs construction for aquatics center

MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — The same day that Mobile’s beloved Olympic swimmer, Paige Madden, returns home, the Mobile County Commission approved phase one of the construction of a new $23 million aquatics center.

The aquatics center will be a part of the Mobile County Sportsplex on Halls Mill Road near the intersection of I-10 and I-65.

“I look at this as a transformative project for our community,” Tyler Kers, Head Coach of the City of Mobile Swim Association, said.

Phase one will include:

  • a 50-meter outdoor pool with dive wells
  • an instructional warm-up pool with locker rooms
  • a 25-yard x 25-meter short course indoor pool

Of the nearly 1,000 swimmers of CMSA, Riley Childress, 15, is expecting to use the pool by her senior year of high school. In her time at CMSA, Childress has practiced and competed in the pool at Bishop State Junior College.

“It’s always really crowded down at Bishop and it’s not the cleanest,” Childress said. “So, I’m excited to get a new pool.”
