Blakely State Park has big plans for big bucks awarded through GOMESA

SPANISH FORT, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Almost $11 million in GOMESA grant money is headed to 10 communities in Baldwin County.

Among them, the Honor Park in Spanish Fort was awarded a $3 million grant. Fairhope’s Flying Creek Nature Preserve was awarded $1.3 million, and for the first time, Blakely State Park was awarded a GOMESA grant, the largest grant they have ever been awarded.

“This is one of the biggest ones ever,” Blakely State Park Director Mike Bunn said. “This is gigantic.”

Bunn already has a plan of how to use it to enhance the 2,000 acres of woods and river. Blakely State Park is in for some big changes.

“This will be the first time we do a major riverfront access project in 20 or 30 years,” Bunn said.

Tuesday morning at a ceremony in Mobile, Alabama, Gov. Kay Ivey awarded almost $30 million on the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act, or GOMESA, grants. Blakely State Park was awarded almost $2 million.
