Mobile residents invited to ‘Celebration of Life’ for Civic Center

MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — City of Mobile officials have written what some would call a love letter to the civic center, which officially closed its doors on Aug. 12, 2024.

A Facebook post on the City of Mobile page listed some of the biggest moments throughout the civic center’s history.

The post said when the civic center opened in 1964, it immediately played a “starring role” in the Mardi Gras traditions.

Mardi Gras isn’t the only event that made the civic center popular. It’s housed dance recitals, plays, monster trucks, and big-name celebrities, including Kevin Hart in November 2022 and Carrie Underwood in 2010. Some of the most famous musicians of all time have made their way to Mobile, including Elvis Presley, Led Zepplin, the Jacksons, Stevie Nicks, Elton John, and Jimmy Buffett.

“In her golden years, loved ones watched as the Civic Center began to show signs of age. It happens to all of us,” read the post.
