Eichold-Mertz teacher is the first Golden Apple winner of the new school year

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Our first Golden Apple Award of the new school year goes to fifth-grade math teacher Shernel Mabien at Eichold Mertz Magnet School.

“I feel like math is so important I just really want them to get the understanding of it. I like to be here for them and not only teach them math but life skills like talking to each other and knowing that it’s okay to have a bad day and talking through it,” said Mabien.

Nominate a Teacher: Golden Apple Award

Mabien said when students are showing signs of a bad day, she’ll often have a one-on-one with them to find out their problems and let them know it’s okay.

However, those times are few in Ms. Mabien’s class because everyone sure seems happy to be here.

“I nominated her because she’s an awesome teacher overall, and I think she’s a really fun teacher and really nice,” said nominator Meredith Bloodworth.

Bloodworth’s sister Catherine agreed. “She’s a great teacher and really helps you understand math in a fun way.”
