Single mom calls Dumas Wesley Community Center’s Sybil Smith Family Village ‘a godsend’

MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — When life deals you a tough hand, sometimes you need a place to go to make a change and turn things around.

For single women and women with children in Mobile, that place is the Sybil Smith Family Village at Dumas Wesley Community Center. The transitional housing program provides 24 months of housing for up to 150 single women dealing with homelessness and helps them develop the necessary skills to be self-sufficient.

Why Mobile will have a Mardi Gras parade in August

Shaneka Walker came to the family village with her two small children in 2020.

“I had poor credit, poor job history, time management, money saving skills, I had none of that,” Walker explained. “So when I got here, I had the opportunity to sit here for two years and figure out what I wanted to do with my life.”

By the time Walker graduated from the program in 2022, she had improved her credit, learned how to pay bills, how to maintain a job and much more.

“I graduated and I went to school,” Walker said. “I got a great career, and I purchased a home for me and my two kids.”
