According to a press release, global steel company SSAB announced that it is investing $12 million in its Mobile operations to increase production capacity and efficiency.

“The investment will enable SSAB Alabama to extend the existing furnace and upgrade shot blasting equipment to increase the facility’s quenching and tempering capacity by 30,000 metric tons — an increase of approximately 10 percent over the current capacity,” the release said.

Though the release notes the investment was proposed to benefit the company, Mobile Chamber officials say the overall impact will boost the Port City.

“SSAB’s continued investment in our community underscores the importance of supporting both new and existing industries in Mobile County,” said Mobile Chamber President and CEO Bradley Byrne. “Retaining 649 jobs and enhancing production capacity is not only a win for SSAB but also for the economic vitality of our region.”
