UPDATE: Family of homicide suspect speaks on ‘tumultuous’ relationship between woman and her ex

Editor’s Note: News 5 has clarified prosecutors’ statements about this case and corrected the suspect’s professional title.

UPDATE (1:46 p.m.) For the first time, family members of a woman accused of stabbing her boyfriend to death in Mobile offer a glimpse into the “tumultuous” relationship that led to the stabbing.

Jennifer Heathcoe’s father, Donald Cain, was in the courtroom as his 31-year-old daughter stood before Circuit Court Judge George Zoghby, crying through most of her arraignment.

Cain said Heathcoe had been dating Taylor Rawlins, 33, for about a year before prosecutors allege she stabbed Rawlins in the upper left side of his chest on Aug. 22 at the Charleston Apartment Homes on Sollie Road. Cain said Heathcoe’s name was on the lease at the apartments.

Cain said he only met Rawlins twice.

‘It was self-defense,’ suspect’s father says

“I just hope she gets out because I don’t feel like she deserves this. It was self-defense,” Cain said. “Every time I saw her for the last couple of times she was with him for about a year, it’s just gone bad for her.”
