Former University of South Alabama employee accused of using office for personal gain

MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) – University of South Alabama’s former special events director faces two Class B felony counts of using her officer for personal gain. Prosecutors allege while Melva LaJoy Jones was on the clock collecting a taxpayer-funded salary, she was working on her private business and using public property to do so. The Mobile County District Attorney’s Office says she secretly ran an event planning business and spent significant time doing so. According to the indictment, Jones used campus computers, equipment and leave time inappropriately to advance her business.
